When was the last time you had a good belly laugh or laughed until it hurt? A good hearty laugh feels so good, and, research indicates that it is good for us. It helps us relax, it can lower blood pressure, release tension, protect the heart, and help fight illness. Something so easy and with so many health benefits, yet people are not taking full advantage of it. So why aren't we all laughing more?
Many people lose their sense of humor when they are stressed. Our sense of humor is like a muscle - when we don't use it, it gets week. You have to practice to build it back up so that you are able to laugh frequently regardless of the circumstances in your life. In fact, when things are stressful, laughter is even more important. You need to learn to change your perspective and laugh at the little things in life – even during stressful situations.
Next time you spill the cereal, try laughing instead of getting angry. Getting aggravated isn't going to fix the situation - in fact it will lead to more stress and tension. Laughing at the situation won't fix it either, but you will release tension and feel better. Being able to laugh at the little things will help you learn to laugh at more stressful events too. Being able to laugh at difficulties and problems doesn't mean that you don't take action to fix the problems or that you won’t have a range of emotions; however, the laughter will help you feel better, manage stress, and make some healthy changes in your body.
