I have written about the importance of gratitude before. I am sure you have heard others touting the benefits of gratitude (better mood and overall health) as well. Understanding the benefits and actually developing an attitude of gratitude are 2 different things. If you are having a hard time cultivating an attitude of gratitude then I suggest that you start a gratitude journal. Research has shown that writing in your gratitude journal at least 4 times a week for 3 weeks can begin to make a positive change in your level of happiness.
The practice of a gratitude journal is easy. It doesn’t take much time or effort and it can really change your life. Start with a fresh notebook or journal that will be dedicated to gratitude journaling only. Each evening before you go to sleep think about your day and focus on the things for which you feel grateful. Make a list of at least 3 things each night. If you have trouble coming up with three things you might need to look at the basics. Do you have a roof overhead and enough food and clean water? If you are reading this post, you can be grateful for the access to the internet.
The most important part of the gratitude journal is that you are genuine. It is important to take some time and really feel the gratitude for each of the three things you list. Try not to just keep writing the same 3 things every night. You don’t want this to become a task that you do on autopilot and without feeling.
