According to an article in Science Daily, laughter yoga (hasya yoga) is a growing trend. Laughter yoga is based on the idea that laughing makes you feel good. Think about the last time you had a good belly laugh. Do you remember how good that felt? Practicing this form of yoga has many health benefits, including: stress reduction, enhanced immune function, improved cardiovascular function, improved circulation, helps with digestion, boosts the respiratory system. Studies have shown that 20 seconds of a hearty belly laugh is like doing 3 minutes on a rowing machine. (No wonder my belly cramps up when I get hysterical and can't quit laughing!) Finally, laughter enhances mood. It is hard to be in a bad mood when you are laughing.
Children laugh 400 times a day and adults only laugh about 15 times a day. Wow! What a difference! Somewhere along the way as we grow up we become very serious. I don't know about you, but I think it is time to laugh more. Check to see if there is a laughter yoga class near you that you can join. If not, there are plenty of ways to tickle your funny bone and jump-start some laughter. Try one of these suggestions: go to a comedy club, hang out with funny people, watch a funny movie, play with children, tell a joke, visit funny websites, and look for the humor in everyday situations. Pick something and make sure you find ways to increase your laughter every day!
