For those of you familiar with Wayne Dyer, you probably know his book You'll see it when you believe it. This book turns the old saying "I'll believe it when I see it" on its ear.
The same is true for affirmations. Instead of "I'll say it when I believe it," it is "I'll believe it when I say it." I had a conversation about affirmations and positive thinking a few days ago with someone. He said to me that he has a hard time with some affirmations because he simply doesn't believe the messages. I have heard this same statement from many people over the years.
Here is the thing, if we wait until we believe the positive statements or affirmations, then there wouldn't really be a need to use that affirmation. Not to mention that we might be waiting a long time. :) The point of affirmations, is to change your negative patterns of thinking. It is like creating new grooves on a record (I suppose I am dating myself by referring to the old vinyl LP's). It is re-wiring your brain.
Of course there is part of you (maybe all of you) that doesn't believe the statement... you have to keep saying it over and over until you make a new groove - until you make that new neural pathway. And yes, sometimes old habits die hard. You may have a very deeply ingrained groove that is opposite of what you want to create. That negative way of thinking and believing did not occur overnight and the new positive pattern won't be created overnight.
So choose your affirmations and then repeat them often. The goal is to replace the negative self-talk with new positive self-talk. It is like recruiting and strengthening a new muscle. Just as it would take time to build up strength in this new muscle and it takes time to re-pattern your thoughts.
