If you have ever played golf, you know that it is much more than developing a perfect swing. In order to succeed at golf, you have to excel at the mental part of the game. Here are some quick tips to beef up your mental game.
Breathe – Breathing is an important part of the game. As you line up each shot, be sure to take a couple of nice deep breaths before you swing. If you do this every time, you will teach your body to relax. Body tension can ruin your swing and can lead to injuries.
Imagery – Use imagery on and off the course. At home you can use imagery to “practice” your swing. Imagine yourself taking the perfect swing. Make the image as vivid in your mind’s eye as possible. Really feel what it is like to take that perfect swing. Imagine yourself going from hole to hole make perfect shots. On the course, you can do the same thing. Right before you take your real shot, imagine taking a perfect swing… see the ball landing right where you want it to land.
Self-talk – You have to be able to control your self-talk on the course. Use positive affirmations between games and while you are on the course. For example: My golf swing is effortless, powerful, and accurate. I remain relaxed and calm. If you find yourself getting negative during the game (i.e.: My short game sucks, I never make shots like this), you need to stop and replace this with positive self-talk.
